Pictures that have incredible levels of detail -
commonly referred to as a "Wow" factor. Full use of the 1920x1080 pixels resolution our TVs are capable of (so called full HD)
Sadly, BBC management have decided to ignore HD industry standards which has led to picture quality that has disappointed UK viewers causing thousands of complaints.
This is what's wrong with BBC HD in the UK on Sky, Freesat and Freeview HD (Virgin viewers you're ok!):
We asked you to rate picture quality on the BBC HD channels, here are the results. Poll closed 29.4.11
The Wrong Screen Resolution - The BBC doesn't broadcast the full HD picture resolution 1920x1080 that HDTVs are designed for. Instead it is transmitting a picture that is only 1440x1080 pixels. We think that this is conning viewers into thinking they are getting full HD picture quality when they're not.
Insufficient Transmission Bitrates - Another area the BBC short changes viewers on is on the transmission bitrate - called mbps (megabits per second). Think of it like your broadband connection speed - the higher the number, the more data can be transmitted, delivering a better picture quality. The BBC have slowly and steadily cut bitrates for BBC HD channel from 20mbps at launch to just 6.6mbps (Oct 2010). It's the lowest bitrate for a major UK HDTV channel, so we're campaigning for the bitrate to be increased back to industry standards.
